Fermín Cacho Ruiz (Ágreda, Soria, 1969) is a legend of Spanish athletics. His outstanding record makes him one of the greatest Spanish athletes of all time. He was one of the world’s great middle-distance stars of the 1990s, above all over 1,500 metres, the distance in which he took Olympic gold at Barcelona 92 and silver at Atlanta 96. His talent, courage, tactical vision and explosive finish made him one of the most feared and respected runners in world middle-distance running.

Sporting achievements…

His main international results:

-Olympic gold at Barcelona 1992 over 1,500 m, becoming the first Spanish athlete to win this title on the track.

-Olympic silver at Atlanta 1996, again over 1,500 m, confirming his consistency at the very highest level.

-World runner-up in Stuttgart 1993 and Gothenburg 1995.

-European champion in Helsinki 1994 and bronze in Budapest 1998.

He set his best international mark in 1997 in Zurich, where he covered the 1,500 m in 3:28.95. That time was the European record until 2013, when Mo Farah broke it, and the Spanish record until 2021, when Mohamed Katir broke it.

What you might not know about Fermín…

Fermín Cacho retired from professional athletics at 33. For various reasons he spent years away from the world of athletics and of running. Many thought we would never again see the great middle-distance runner from Soria wearing a race number, but in 2019 he laced up his shoes again and trained, alongside fellow Soria native Abel Antón, to run the 2020 Seville marathon; he finished the 42.195 kilometres in a little over 4 hours and 20 minutes, with the satisfaction of a great challenge met after some years of ups and downs in mood and health.

In recent years he has got himself into shape and running is once again part of his daily routine. There are many road races and athletics meetings all over Spain that treat him with the honours of a great sporting star, three decades after he became the king of the 1,500. Just as during his years in the elite, Fermín Cacho still radiates humility, honesty, warmth and good humour. His presence at sporting events across Spain tends to look like this: dozens and dozens of greetings from people who remember his feat at Barcelona 92, dozens and dozens of photos with admirers of every age and, above all, dozens and dozens of grateful smiles for his warmth and kindness.

["post-106994","embajador","type-embajador","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry
["GET
