In this article, we offer you 3 tricks to remove bad odors from sportswear.

Over time and with intensive use, it can be inevitable for sportswear to end up picking up an annoying smell that doesn’t go away with washing, as many runners know well. This happens because technical garments are made with synthetic materials that are capable of wicking sweat to promote breathability.

There are different remedies to remove bad odors from sportswear, but at 42K we recommend these 3 tricks to remove bad odors from sportswear for being effective and easy to apply.

How to remove bad odors from sportswear?

Sweat is the cause of bad odors in all types of garments, but especially in sportswear because intense physical activity produces more sweating.

Why does sweat occur? Sweat is a bodily fluid secreted by the sweat glands that is expelled through the skin as a means of body cooling known as perspiration. Its composition is mainly water with small amounts of minerals—sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium—lactic acid, and urea.

Sweat or, rather, perspiration is the body’s natural mechanism to regulate body temperature, as its evaporation from the skin reduces temperature. However, sweat serves another function, which is to eliminate toxins.

Most commonly, sweat is produced preferentially in the armpits, the groin area, the feet, and the hands, although it can extend to the entire surface of the skin, especially in high ambient temperatures or during intense exercise, which produces an increase in body temperature.

3 tricks to remove bad odors from sportswear

Whether you’re an athlete or not, if you have technical garments that have a bad odor despite being washed, take note. Here are 3 tricks to remove bad odors from sportswear:

Baking Soda: It is very effective when washing sportswear to neutralize bad odors. Add a small amount (following the manufacturer’s instructions, although four to eight tablespoons is usually normal) to the liquid detergent or during the rinse cycle.

White vinegar: There are several ways to use white vinegar to eliminate bad odors. Soak the garments for 30-40 minutes in a bucket or basin with one part white vinegar and four parts cold water before washing. Another way to use it is to add it to the detergent drawer during the washing process. The acid in the vinegar helps remove grease, dirt, and bacteria from the fabric that cause the bad odor.

Salt: Submerge the garments in a bucket or basin with warm water in which you have previously dissolved 3-4 tablespoons of table salt; wait about 30 minutes and then wash them.

*Warning: before proceeding for the first time with any of these 3 tricks to remove bad odors from sportswear, try it first with one garment and not with your entire load of sportswear to check that you are doing it correctly.

How to avoid the appearance of bad odors in technical garments?

Bad odors in technical garments that have been washed is a problem that has a solution. As we have just seen, there are different tricks (we have shown you the 3 we consider most effective and easy to do at home with products that are available to anyone) to remove bad odors from sportswear, although it is also worth remembering that there are a series of precautions that will help us avoid or delay the appearance of annoying odors in our sportswear.

Technical fabric requires special care when given intensive use.

Wash after each use and as soon as possible

As a first measure to avoid the appearance of bad odors in sportswear, wash it as soon as possible and always, always, after each use; if you can’t wash it immediately, air it out until it’s dry.

Under no circumstances should you place it damp and/or sweaty in the laundry basket. If we leave it for hours or days in the laundry basket, we allow time for the bad odor to soak in.

Another bad idea, a very bad one, is to leave used clothes (especially if they are sweaty and damp) inside the gym bag because that can lead to the formation of mold and fungi, which will be the cause of bad odors that will stay embedded in the garments.

We recommend always washing sportswear after each use because even if you think you haven’t sweated, it’s almost certain that you have, especially in areas like the armpits or the groin area.

Eliminating bad odors in sportswear won’t be a concern if you get used to always washing your sports garments after each use and, if possible, without letting much time pass from when you used it until the moment of washing. Do you know how to wash sportswear?

Do not use fabric softener

Another recommendation is not to use fabric softener when washing sportswear. Fabric softener will prevent the technical fabric from retaining its properties for longer. Fabric softener is the enemy of the treatments the fabric receives to promote softness (and reduce the risk of chafing), breathability, or color fastness.

The 42K running t-shirts, for example, are made with state-of-the-art technical fabrics that incorporate specific treatments to promote softness, speed up drying, or guarantee the durability and vividness of the colors. These treatments lose their effectiveness with the use of fabric softeners.

Always wash sportswear after each use.

In addition, fabric softeners leave a kind of layer or residue on the fibers that traps the bacteria that cause bad odors. This residue accumulates with washing and hinders the effectiveness of water and detergent in removing bad odors from sportswear.

And although it may seem obvious to point out, remember that sportswear can deteriorate irreversibly if washed with hot water (always try to wash at 30ºC maximum), subjected to very powerful spin cycles, put in the dryer, or ironed.

As we always say at 42K, our sportswear wants nothing to do with either the dryer or the iron.

Wash inside out

It is highly recommended to wash inside out sports garments of all kinds: t-shirts, shorts, underwear, sports bras…

This has several advantages: firstly, it protects the logos or crests of your club, sponsors, etc.; secondly, a more effective wash is achieved, as the bacteria that produce bad odors are concentrated on the inside of the garments (especially in those areas in contact with the armpits, the soles of the feet, or the groin area) and the cleaning action of the water and detergent is much more direct.

Now you know how to remove bad odors from sportswear with 3 simple tricks, but you might also be interested in knowing how to wash sportswear effectively so that it stays in good condition and to extend its useful life.

It is advisable to always wash sports socks inside out.

Especially if you use your sportswear regularly, we advise you to follow our recommendations to keep them in good condition and make them last longer (although nothing is infinite and sportswear also has a limited useful life).
