A beer after training? Do you know the Beer Runners movement?

by Paco Amoros

A beer after training? Do you know the Beer Runners movement? 1Sport involves a part of sacrifice and effort, but the benefits it brings are many more. And one of them is being able to share time with friends taking care of health without neglecting the fun. To encourage those groups of friends who do not want to give up making a few beers and tapas with friends to exercise, the Beer Runners initiative was born, which now comes to Spain.

Beer Runners is an initiative created with the aim of encouraging sports to be practiced in the same way that beer is enjoyed. The movement, which emerged in Philadelphia, encourages people to go out for a group run and share a few beers after exercise.

The Beer Runners movement was born in a running club in Philadelphia (the Fishtown Beer Runners) who discovered a study carried out by the Higher Council for Scientific Research and the University of Granada on the relationship between moderate beer consumption and sport. The study, led by Dr. Manuel Castillo Garzón, Professor of Physiology at the University of Granada, concludes that beer can contribute to hydric recovery after exercising, a lesson that these runners put into practice once a week when They go out for a group run and end the tour in a bar to enjoy a very Spanish custom, have a beer and a tapa. Edinburgh, Chicago and New York are other cities that have already joined the Beer Runners movement and which will now also be joined by various Spanish cities.
Specifically, the Cerveceros de España association will take the initiative to eight Spanish cities this year to promote sport and active life and will do so with the support of Professor Castillo himself, who will participate in the tours.
A Coruña has been the first city to host Beer Runners and the following will be Barcelona on September 29 at the Parc del Fòrum, and Madrid on October 6. León, Toledo, Seville, Las Palmas and Zaragoza will also be added to the list. All routes will have an approximate length of between 3 and 4 kilometers, and will run through the main green areas of these cities such as parks and promenades.
The objective is to move anyone to do sports and for this, in addition to the tours to present the project in these eight cities, a virtual meeting point has been created www.beerrunners.es. This website will propose routes, useful tips for those who start running and a space will be offered in which those interested can organize themselves and meet other people from their cities to go running together and, if they want, enjoy after the rite. of the aperitif.
David April, the founder of the Fishtown Beer Runners that have launched this initiative, will also run with Santi Millán, Professor Castillo Garzón and the rest of the participants in the Madrid and Barcelona events.
What do beer and sports have in common?
“We know that people meet up with their friends, acquaintances or relatives to have a few beers. Why not do the same with sports? If beer is enjoyed more in company, exercise can also be more attractive if practiced in a group ”, explains Jacobo Olalla Marañón, general manager of Cerveceros de España. "Beer Runners unites two aspects of Mediterranean culture, sport and the social act of sharing a beer, and it is also a way to encourage anyone, both professional and amateur athletes, to follow healthy living guidelines" he adds.
For physical activity to be fully satisfactory, it is important to carry out an adequate rehydration process and that is where sports and beer can go hand in hand. "Due to its composition, organoleptic characteristics and its low alcohol content, beer, ingested in moderate doses by adults accustomed to its consumption, can be a complementary drink to water to rehydrate after sports practice" emphasizes Professor Manuel Castillo.
Cerveceros de España is the entity that has represented the entire beer sector in Spain since 1922. This association is currently made up of the following business groups, which account for practically all beer production in Spain: Mahou-San Miguel, Heineken Spain, Grupo Damm, Estrella de Levante, Grupo Alhambra Alimentaria, Hijos de Rivera, Compañía Cervecera de Canarias and La Zaragozana.
