Carla Masip, known as the “Lleona del Maestrat”, is an athlete from Castellón who stands for the value of consistency, perseverance and sustained work. After standing out in the younger age groups with a promising career ahead of her, she had to face a three-year break because of injury. Having come close to the podium several times since her return, in 2026 she became Spanish 1,500 metres indoor champion, the culmination of an exemplary comeback.

What you might not know about Carla…
Carla is a PE teacher at the Leopoldo Querol state secondary school in Vinaròs, her home town. She was out of competition for 3 years, between 2020 and 2022, with a serious Achilles tendon injury. “For almost a year and a half I tried to heal it every way I could, until there was no option left but surgery; in the end I spent three years without competing and I used the time to pass my teaching exams”, she explains. She took up athletics because the football club she played for in her town had no girls’ team. She is known as the Lleona del Maestrat — the lioness of El Maestrat — for the long, curly hair she has always worn in middle-distance races.
