KMSXELA, the technical garments that raise awareness of ALS
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disease that affects the motor neurones of the brain, brainstem and spinal cord, the cells in charge of transmitting the brain's command for voluntary movement to the muscles. The degeneration of the motor neurones means the brain progressively loses its ability to control muscle movement. Those affected develop muscle atrophy which, as it advances, causes progressive paralysis. As well as affecting motor independence, it also damages the ability to speak, swallow and breathe. There is currently no cure for this disease, which generally progresses very quickly, and no treatment is yet available that can slow down or halt the degenerative process. KMSXELA is a personal initiative born from the determination of a running enthusiast, Xavi, to lend a hand in giving visibility to ALS and also to help with raising funds for research into this disease. The kmsxela running T-shirts were the first technical garments to see the light of day, and other technical products such as sweatshirts, bandanas and arm warmers were added later. Part of the price of these kmsxela charity products is donated to the Fundación Catalana de ELA Miquel Valls. This non-profit body promotes all kinds of actions aimed at improving the quality of life of people affected by ALS and their families. There are already hundreds of runners all over Spain wearing the colours of KMSXELA to help give visibility to this terrible disease.
