Getting to know Carmen María Pérez a little
Carmen María Pérez is the best Spanish woman ultra-distance runner, as all her wins and podium places show, but above all because she holds several Spanish records: 6 Hours, 50 miles, 12 Hours and 24 Hours. Her legs have spent almost two decades grinding out kilometres in countless ultra trail races (UTMB, Penyagolosa Trails, 101 kilómetros de Ronda…) and ultra-distance events. Right now her sporting sights are set on two races: Ultrabalaton (a 209 km race around Europe’s largest lake, Lake Balaton) and Badwater 135, where in 2026 she is due to become the first Spanish woman to take part officially, as in 2023 she took part as a crew member for her partner, fellow ultra-distance runner Iván Penalba, covering more than 160 kilometres on the burning tarmac of that punishing Californian race.
Personal sporting achievements…
The ultra-distance runner from Requena (Valencia) has important wins on Spanish soil on her record: Transilicitana 100K, Subida al Pico Veleta, 90K Camino de la Cruz (Murcia) and 100 Millas Sierra de los Bandoleros, races in which she not only won but also set new women’s course records. In November 2023, at the 24 Hours World Championships held in Taipei (Taiwan), she set the Spanish record with 240.889 kilometres. She had previously set these other Spanish records: 6 Hours (81.226 km), 50 miles (5h58’22”), 100 kilometres (7h47’14”) and 12 Hours (147.329 km). In 2025 she set a new Spanish 24-hour record at the World Championships in Albi with 249.480 km and became W40 world champion.
In 2024 she stepped onto the second place of the podium at the Spartathlon, one of the most demanding and prestigious ultra-distance races in the world, held every year in Greece between Athens and Sparta over a distance of 246 kilometres. She has won several international races such as the 150 miles of Brazil and the legendary 50 km race at the Dead Sea.
Her next two goals: Ultrabalaton (going all the way round Europe’s largest lake, Lake Balaton, 209 km) and Badwater 135, as the first Spanish woman to take part in this race

What you might not know about Carmen…
In 2011 an injury, a Morton’s neuroma, kept her from running for 8 months. She decided to look for alternatives so she could keep training and, after ruling out the bike because that hurt too, she found she could use the elliptical trainer with no problem. “The elliptical was my salvation. I started doing all my training and my weekend races on the elliptical; when my friends went off to races I went to the gym and did them on the elliptical; on the elliptical I did the Valencia half marathon, in October, and a month later the Valencia marathon
in 3h38’30”, so you could say I stayed active thanks to the elliptical”. In December 2016 she set out to do 100 kilometres on the elliptical; no sooner said than done. “During the 10h and 50 minutes I spent on the elliptical I asked the people who came to cheer me on to bring toys, to be donated at Christmas to children in need”.
