Iván Penalba has already debuted the exclusive 42K shirt he will wear to compete in the Badwater 135.
The Valencian ultrarunner has been in Las Vegas for several days, an American city rising in the middle of the Mojave Desert, doing acclimatization training in high temperatures through desert areas similar to those awaiting him at the Badwater 135.
“In Death Valley the temperature is higher (it’s one of the hottest places on the planet), but in the Las Vegas desert temperatures are also high, around 38 degrees, and these training sessions are helping Carmen and me a lot to do real tests of hydration, nutrition, etc.”, explains the runner.
Iván Penalba is already training with the 42K shirt he will wear at Badwater 135
Iván and his inseparable Carmen Pérez have already trained with the shirt they will use on race day, which has been exclusively made by 42K.
It’s a garment made with 100% recycled fabric Infinitech, a fabric made from polyester yarn obtained from recycling plastic bottles. This fabric is used by 42K in different collections (Ozone, Elements…) and also for making fully customized shirts from the Custom section, the line of technical garments for clubs, sports teams and groups wanting unique and exclusive designs on the highest quality fabrics.
The fabric of the shirt for Badwater 135 guarantees maximum performance in lightness and breathability for Iván Penalba and the rest of his team: Joaquín Candel (team captain) and ultrarunners Carmen Pérez and Mexican Óscar Hernández, who will cover some sections of the route accompanying Penalba to assist him.
The 42K Design department has created a shirt in which, logically, white predominates because it’s the mandatory color for running in Badwater 135 (white is the color that least attracts UV rays). It also features the colors of the Spanish flag on the back, something all participants from outside the USA usually do to identify their nationality (in 2022 there were 23 different nationalities among the 95 male and female runners who lined up at the start).
For the second consecutive year 42K is Iván Penalba’s technical brand at Badwater 135, a legendary race in the ultrarunning world reserved for runners with unique physical and mental conditions given the extreme toughness of the race: 135 miles (217 kilometers) through one of the most inhospitable places on the planet (in the Mojave Desert) due to its extremely high temperatures.
Participants in Badwater 135, no more than a hundred who only receive the organization’s invitation after proving extensive experience in ultra-distance races, have to cover endless roads under a scorching sun that pushes the mercury up to 50 degrees during the day and barely drops to 34 at night.
42K has been sponsoring Iván Penalba for years and has been supporting his dream of winning Badwater 135 and setting a new time record in the demanding Californian race from the start; currently, the race record is held by Valmir Nunes at 22h:51’29”.
Iván Penalba already made history in 2022 by being the first Spaniard to reach the podium of the race, but his great challenge is to inscribe his name in the Badwater winners’ list and become the first Spanish runner to win the most extreme and epic race on the planet.
