The Importance of the Sports Physiotherapist

by David Valenzuela Díaz

In this article I’m going to talk to you as a physiotherapy professional about the importance of the sports physiotherapist.

Any sports discipline requires physical preparation to be able to tackle it safely. History is full of examples of athletes who have achieved their goals thanks to good physical preparation, but it’s also full of athletes who have reached the doors of the long-awaited competition (the marathon or any other event) and have gotten injured despite being in great shape.

But why does this happen? Why are there runners (or athletes in general) who get injured when they’re at their best?

A Sports Physiotherapist Prepares You to Train

The first answer to the question of why there are runners who get injured when they’re at their best is that physical preparation is not the only variable that an athlete, in our case a runner, should consider when conscientiously preparing for a goal or challenge.

The Sports Physiotherapist, Key to Sports Health

A sports physiotherapist prepares you to train, a physical trainer prepares you to compete, and a coach prepares you to perform. And that’s the key: that the foundation of progress lies in sports physiotherapy, since without “sports health” you can’t train, compete, or perform at the highest level.

Physical preparation is necessary to control and measure loads in progression, but always based on the prior assessment carried out by a sports physiotherapist who, through functional biomechanical tests, creates the foundation on which an athlete’s preparation can be built with quality, not quantity. As the slogan of a famous tire commercial said some time ago… “power without control is useless”.

And that’s where the sports physiotherapist comes in, in prevention to manage loads, modify postures, and turn the athlete into a physical machine with perfect biomechanics.

It’s scientifically proven that the central nervous system heals or adapts you while you rest, so you can be functional, and if you don’t have control over normal biomechanics, an incorrect adaptation to sports demands will occur, which can ultimately cause injuries.

The Sports Physiotherapist Helps Avoid and Prevent Injuries

So, what can you do to avoid and prevent injuries? The solution is simple: go to the sports physiotherapist with your training plan so that through prior assessment, with adaptive exercise added to the preparation, they can create the perfect synergy to give quality to your training.

In the running world it’s very common to go to centers where gait studies are performed, but the reality is that you’re going to move the way your biomechanics decide, so you need to be controlled in static mode to give quality to the dynamic.

And how do we do this? At BOX 55 we use an application you should know about if you’re an athlete and don’t want to get injured: Valobando-Functional Biomechanical Analysis.

The advice of the sports physiotherapist is key for any athlete.

Valobando, an Application to Prevent and Heal

Valobando is an application designed for the biomechanical assessment of athletes with the aim of avoiding and preventing injuries, as well as planning exercise designed especially for athletes who want to recover their functionality and thus maintain health and avoid injuries or relapses during physical preparation.

Valobando is an application that uses biomechanical tests based on scientific evidence and clinical experience to give us the necessary information to know our athlete (their weaknesses and deficits) in order to create specific work through planned therapeutic exercise.

This application calculates the athlete’s injury risk percentage by joints, between lower and upper limbs or between both sides; it classifies the athlete within work pillars through physiotherapy control, making it possible to assign exercises so they can work at home during their training sessions with the goal of preventing injuries, without stopping training.

This application is the solution to the “abandonment” that athletes experience in rehabilitation and readaptation when they have home-based work. It’s very easy for the athlete to use, and through self-assessment they can see their improvement and inform the sports physiotherapist so they can modify exercises and design tasks that promote their recovery if injured or prevent injuries to tackle all sports challenges without risk.

The Importance of the Sports Physiotherapist

It’s also an application that will allow specific and correct evaluation of a child athlete in their growth years to decide which specialist to consult to prevent future problems.

Valobando allows athlete self-assessment and interaction with the sports physiotherapist from home or anywhere in the world. It’s very useful for monitoring athletes during vacation periods or preseason and creating prevention work for when they return to training.

This application fills the gap between physiotherapy and the athlete.

Don’t leave the possibility of not getting injured to chance; don’t leave your sports season to chance; don’t leave your dreams to chance. Find your sports physiotherapist.
